WRITING | ILLUSTRATION | BOOK DESIGN
About The Organisation
Pickle Yolk Books is a new independent publishing house founded by Richa Jha in New Delhi Capital Region, India. They publish picture books with universal themes and also in contemporary Indian settings. The stories are created in English.
About the Internship
Interns at Pickle Yolk work closely with Richa Jha and create their own complete picture book with min 24 pages to max 32 in about two months. At about the 1/3rd mark, all the sketches should be in place. Next 4 weeks will be dedicated to colouring and the last week for text layout and book design. While also leaving days for designing the cover.
The story revolves around a young girl who struggles to paint anything after winning a painting competition at her school. It is a journey of fear, self-competition and feeling freighted with responsibility and finally finding a resolution.
Story in brief
Process
• Create story of 100-400 words (the less the better). The story should consist of a proper beginning, middle part should include interesting challenges, problems that are compounding followed by a low point (or rock bottom). Following this should be the turn around or resolution of the problem by the character themself (or atleast 95% it should be the character’s work and no ‘act of god’). And the story should not be ‘too sweet or syrupy’, it should be interesting enough to keep the readers engrossed.
• Design Characters for the story and establish a finished style of illustration.
• Compositions should be distinctive with layered interepretations.
• Getting storyboard in place (min 24, max 36 pages) with double spreads. Storyboard should have multiple visual narratives, it shouldn’t just be a paraphrase of the written story. Every page turn should be interesting to the kid. Then fit the story across different spreads of the board.
• Make final sketches (in 8 by 22 inches wide spreads). Coloring the spreads in the finalised style. Sending the coloured pages as they finish for simultaneous review.
• Design Cover page. Deciding what aspect of the story to put on the cover while not giving out the ending and creating suspense.
• Laying of text (with editing) and designing the book.
• Finally, all the work is self-paced but to be completed in 2 months.
